The initial concept for Forged by Valor is formed

Recognizing the challenges faced by Veterans transitioning to civilian life, including finding employment and the lack of labor skills, we identified a solution that would equip them with valuable skills for the modern workforce, ensuring a smoother transition and empowering them with opportunities for success in their civilian careers.

Extensive market research revealed a high demand for skilled welders across the US, coupled with a significant population of Veterans seeking new career paths.

Early partnerships were formed with Rochester Arc + Flame Center to advise on curriculum development and the Veterans Outreach Center to assist with Veteran outreach.

Building the Program:

Curriculum development begins, focusing on practical skills and knowledge by incorporating feedback from industry professionals and veterans.

Educational modules are identified, along with comprehensive training materials and resources.

The admissions process is established, outlining eligibility criteria and application procedures.

To secure essential funding for scholarships and equipment, we submitted a grant proposal to the Karpus Family Foundation. While the grant was not awarded, the process provided valuable insights that will inform our future fundraising strategies. We remain committed to securing resources to ensure accessibility for veterans and a high-quality training environment.

Establishing the Foundation:

After careful consideration, the decision is made to establish Forged by Valor as a non-profit organization, enabling us to better serve Veterans and pursue our mission of providing accessible, high-quality training.

Thorough research is conducted on the accreditation requirements of the New York State Bureau of Proprietary School Supervision (BPSS). This includes identifying the necessary documentation, fees, and timelines involved in the accreditation process.

Identifying the Funding Need & Planning for Sustainability:

Recognizing the two-year timeline for GI Bill approval, Forged by Valor is actively pursuing funding to support the initial cohorts of Veterans. Our goal is to provide scholarships for a minimum of 3 Veterans per semester, ensuring continuous training opportunities while we work towards obtaining VA approval.

We begin reaching out to multiple organizations and potential donors who share our commitment to supporting Veterans' transition to civilian careers. This funding will be crucial in covering training costs, materials, and support services for Veterans participating in the program.

To maximize efficiency and minimize overhead costs, we have established a partnership with Rochester Arc + Flame Center that allows us to utilize their state-of-the-art welding facility and equipment. This strategic collaboration eliminates the need for significant initial investment in facilities and equipment, allowing us to focus resources directly on Veteran support and program development.

In parallel, we are developing a comprehensive fundraising strategy to ensure the long-term sustainability of Forged by Valor and its ability to serve Veterans for years to come.

Securing Non-Profit Status and Preparing for Accreditation:

This quarter brings a significant accomplishment for Forged by Valor: achieving official non-profit status with 501(c)(3) recognition from the IRS. This hard-earned designation solidifies the organization's legitimacy and opens doors to a wider range of funding opportunities, including grants and tax-deductible donations. With this crucial milestone achieved, the team sets its sights on the next major hurdle: preparing for the rigorous NYS BPSS accreditation process.

The task of compiling the necessary documentation for the accreditation application proves to be a complex and time-consuming endeavor. The NYS Education Department requires extensive information across various aspects of the program, demanding meticulous attention to detail and thorough record-keeping.

Here's a glimpse into the intricacies of this process and why it requires significant time and effort:

Curriculum Development and Documentation: Forged by Valor must meticulously document its comprehensive 800-hour curriculum, outlining each course, module, learning objective, instructional methodology, and assessment strategy. This involves ensuring alignment with industry standards, incorporating feedback from subject matter experts, and demonstrating the program's effectiveness in equipping veterans with in-demand welding skills.

Instructor Qualifications: Detailed records of each instructor's qualifications, certifications, and experience must be compiled and verified. This ensures that the program is delivered by qualified professionals with the expertise to provide high-quality instruction and mentorship to veterans.

Facility and Equipment Documentation: The accreditation application requires comprehensive documentation of the training facilities and equipment. This includes providing proof of safety inspections, ensuring compliance with all relevant regulations, and demonstrating that the facilities are adequate to support the program's hands-on training components.

Student Services and Policies: Forged by Valor must outline the support services offered to students, such as career counseling, academic advising, and access to mental health resources. Additionally, clear and comprehensive administrative policies related to admissions, student records, grading, and program completion must be documented and aligned with NYS requirements.

Compiling this extensive documentation requires significant time and effort from the Forged by Valor team. It involves gathering information from various sources, ensuring accuracy and completeness, and presenting it in a clear and organized manner that meets the stringent standards of the NYS Education Department. This meticulous preparation is essential for demonstrating the program's quality and commitment to effectively serving veterans, ultimately paving the way for accreditation and the launch of this impactful initiative.

Building a Foundation for Financial Sustainability:

Recognizing the critical role of funding in launching and sustaining Forged by Valor, the team will dedicate this quarter to developing a robust and multifaceted fundraising strategy. This will involve exploring a diverse range of avenues to secure the necessary financial resources to support the program's growth and ensure its long-term success.

Individual Giving: A key component of the strategy will focus on cultivating relationships with individual donors who are passionate about supporting veterans and believe in the transformative power of skills-based training. This will involve creating compelling communication materials that highlight the program's mission, impact, and the personal stories of veterans whose lives are changed through Forged by Valor. Online donation platforms will be established, and personalized outreach will be conducted to build connections with potential donors.

Corporate Partnerships: Forged by Valor will actively seek partnerships with corporations that align with its values and recognize the value of investing in veterans' workforce development. This will include approaching businesses in the manufacturing and skilled trades sectors who may be interested in sponsoring scholarships, donating equipment, or providing mentorship opportunities to veterans in the program.

Foundation Grants: The team will conduct thorough research to identify foundations that support veteran initiatives, workforce development programs, and educational opportunities. Grant proposals will be carefully crafted, emphasizing the program's unique approach, its potential for impact, and its alignment with the foundation's funding priorities.

Special Events: The team will begin brainstorming and planning special events designed to raise awareness and generate financial support for Forged by Valor's mission. This may include fundraising galas, golf tournaments, auctions, or community-based events that showcase the skills and talents of veterans in the program. These events will serve as opportunities to connect with potential donors, build community partnerships, and celebrate the achievements of veterans.
